INDIANAPOLIS—On Monday, Governor Holcomb, in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), announced the opening of an eight-week mass vaccination clinic in Gary. The clinic will run from April 7 to June 2 at the former Roosevelt High School, and will be capable of administering 3,000 COVID-19 vaccines per day. The site was reportedly chosen by FEMA due to its placement near a large number of high-risk citizens and medically underserved populations.

Assistant Democratic Leader Eddie Melton (D-Gary) had the following response to the announcement of the mass clinic.

“I want to thank the Biden Administration, Governor Holcomb and Dr. Box for their work on getting this mass vaccination clinic scheduled and organized in Gary,” Sen. Melton said. “It’s vital—both in our efforts to combat this virus and protect citizens—to ensure our underserved communities have access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Getting these mass vaccination sites up and running in areas like Gary is a critical step in coming out on the other side of this pandemic. I truly applaud the leadership and effort that went into selecting and arranging this ongoing vaccination clinic to serve the Northwest Indiana population. ”

“It will take the entire community to educate citizens on the importance of getting this vaccine, and I will continue discussing the significance of taking this necessary step with the residents in my community. The sooner we can get more Hoosiers vaccinated, the sooner we can get back to normal. The only way we get back to normal is in a safe, responsible manner.”
