LANANE: Stop using classrooms as political leverage

INDIANAPOLIS—Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) released the following statement in response to an executive order issued by the governor to intervene in the Department of Education’s administration of ISTEP testing:

“My initial reaction to the governor’s actions is that this is once again and intrusion on the authority of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

If the governor has concerns, he should address them with Superintendent Ritz. Instead, he has issued this pre-emptive executive order.

Of even more concern, this is a pattern of intrusion that began as soon as Superintendent Ritz took office.

The timing of this is very caustic. Just this afternoon, the House of Representatives is taking action to limit her authority, and similar proposals are pending in the Senate. This new action just seems to throw more fuel on the fire.

I fail to see how this helps our kids learn. I fail to see how this helps teachers teach.

I fail to see this type of intrusion on the duties of the other elected state office-holders, and I ultimately fail to see the end game of this Republican strategy other than using the classroom as political leverage.”
