INDIANAPOLIS– A proposal authored by State Senator Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) focused on increasing donations to the Military Family Relief Fund has passed the first legislative hurdle. Senate Bill (SB) 233 was drafted after Senate District 25 constituent Roxanne Painter brought the issue to Sen. Lanane’s attention. The measure gained approval by the Senate Committee on Veterans and the Military on Tuesday.

“I am very grateful that this proposal was brought to my attention by Roxanne. The bill seeks to afford military members and their families the same opportunity others receive with the tax return check box,” said Sen. Lanane. “I am thrilled to carry this bill for our veterans and am always encouraged by the creative solutions offered by those in District 25.”

SB 233 would allow Hoosiers to donate all or part of their tax refund to the Military Family Relief Fund. Similar options are currently available to taxpayers wishing to contribute to the Indiana Nongame Fund and public K-12 education. By expanding this opportunity to include the Military Family Relief Fund, Hoosier veterans and their families would have greater access to food, housing, medical services, and other essential needs.

The Military Family Relief Fund was established in 2014 to support Hoosier veterans who had served on or after the attacks on September 11th.

SB 233 passed out of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs & the Military by a vote of 8-1 and now moves to the full Senate where changes can be made before sending it to the House of Representatives for further review.

Sen. Lanane represents Indiana Senate District 25 which includes portions of Madison and Delaware counties, including the City of Muncie and the southeastern portion of the City of Anderson.
